While there does appear to be some parallels between the

start of the Arab Spring and the recent Algerian marches, experts are wary of drawing comparisons.

McInerney says these protests feel very reminiscent of what was witnessed in Tunisia in Janua

ry 2011. He adds that similar protests erupted in Algeria at the same time but were quickly and violently quashed.

”In the past, the default position [for the regime] has been to crackdown on protests … The nature of these protests, they’ve chos

en not to do that. They’ve been more careful and thoughtful and strategic in how they respond,” he says.

McInerney says there are some concerns the regime will try to trigger violent cl

ashes, perhaps by sending pro-regime thugs into the protests to create violence as a pretext for a crackdown.

For now, protesters seem intent on continuing their calls for Bouteflika to withdraw and planning further peaceful marches.

”If the determination continues and if the protesters keep their demands clear … and i

f they remain peaceful, this might transform into a big social movement,” Carnegie research scholar Gha

nem says, adding that countries across the Mediterranean will be closely watching how events unfold.

Preparatory tests for manned space station mission to star

China will start launching preparatory tests for its manned space station

mission in the second half of this year, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

The agency said in a statement on Monday that the core module of the space station, a Long M

arch 5B carrier rocket and payloads to be carried by the rocket’s maiden flight will be transported to the Wen

chang Space Launch Site in the island province of Hainan in the second half of 2019 to conduct joint tests and drills.

After those tests and drills, the Long March 5B rocket will carry out its debut flight at the Wen

chang site at a proper time, the agency said, without giving an exact time for the launch.

Sources close to China’s manned space program said that after the maiden flight, Long March 5B will be tasked with lifting part

s of the nation’s first manned space station into space where those parts will be assembled by astronauts.

Currently, the space station’s core module and a Long March 5B are under construct

on, the agency said, adding that it is also selecting and training astronauts for this mission.

In addition to sharing resources, the Chinese mainland has

stepped up efforts in recent years to treat Taiwan compatriots equitably. Last year, the mainland released 31 measures related to ec

onomic and cultural exchanges and cooperation with Taiwan, offering the same opportunities as m

ainland residents enjoy in education, doing business and living on the mainland.

To date, 72 local authorities in 25 provinces, autonomous

regions and municipalities have formulated implementation measures, with many pub

lishing more details, including policy interpretations, public services and contacts, An said.

Over the past year, more than 2,000 enterprises from Taiwan on the mai

ve received special funds to support green, intelligent manufacturing and upgrades. A number of companies joined m

jor mainland projects including Beijing’s new airport and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

More young people in Taiwan have chosen to pursue their dreams on the mainland, with the number of students w

delivery people consider their job ‘promising’ Surveyter tra

BEIJING – A recent survey by China’s State Post Bureau said 35.8 percent of delivery workers c

onsidered their occupation “promising” and would like to continue in that position.

The survey consisted of 6,000 delivery people across China mostly born in the 1980s and 1990s.

About 76 percent of the delivery workers are from rural areas, wh

ile nearly 16 percent are from towns or counties, according to the survey.

Major sources of stress for delivery workers include low wages and insufficient benefits, lack of understanding of t

heir job from customers and the public, long working hours and little chances of promotion, the survey said.

Most of those surveyed earn less than 5,000 yuan ($743) per month but gen

erally gain more during the annual Double 11 online shopping spree in No

vember, during which over 80 percent of the country’s delivery workers handle more than 200 packages per day.

China’s express delivery industry is rapidly developing, with around 3 million delivery workers.

”Delivery worker” was added to the revision of the national occupation list of China in 2015, meaning it has been recognized by the state as an occupation.

The world looks longingly at a post-Trump eraon is CNN’s intern

If Europe’s leaders, diplomats and security professionals had a vote in the 2020 US presidential elections, it doesn’t see

m likely they’d give it to President Trump. At least, that’s how it seemed at the 2019 Munich Security Conference.

Hundreds of dignitaries crammed into tight corridors, moving between the modest meeting halls of Munich’s Bayerischer Hof Hotel.

The event has grown in recent years. As prime ministers and presidents rub shoulders wit

h CEO’s and policy wonks, conversations straddle global differences and attempt to shape the world order.

Biden says US should remain committed to its allies abroad

It is an odd, almost old-fashioned mix. It’s rare at global summits these days that repo

rters can mingle with the people they cover and even engage them in casual conversation.

“Three corns and one roast raven,” said Dolorous Edd.

“Three corns and one roast raven,” said Dolorous Edd. “Very good, m’lord, only Hobb’s made boiled eggs, black sausage, and apples stewed with prunes. The apples stewed with prunes are excellent, except for the prunes. I won’t

eat prunes myself. Well, there was one time when Hobb chopped them up with chestnuts and carrots and hid them in a hen. Never trust a cook, my lord. They’ll prune you when you least expect it.”

“Later.” Breakfast could wait; Stannis could not. “Any trouble from the stockades last night?”

“Not since you put guards on the guards, m’lord.”

“Good.” A thousand wildlings had been penned up beyond the Wall, the captives Stannis Baratheon had taken when his knights had smashed Mance Rayder’s patchwork host. Many of the prisoners were women, and some of the

guards had been sneaking them out to warm their beds. King’s men, queen’s men, it did not seem to matter; a few black brothers had tried the same thing. Men were men, and these were the only women for a thousand leagues.

“Two more wildlings turned up to surrender,” Edd went on. “A mother with a girl clinging to her skirts. She had a boy babe too, all swaddled up in fur, but he was dead.”

“Dead,” said the raven. It was one of the bird’s favorite words. “Dead, dead, dead.”

“Religion will save us,” I said. Since when I could remember, religion had been very close to my heart.

“Religion?” Mr. Kumar grinned broadly. “I don’t believe inreligion. Religion is darkness.”Darkness? I was puzzled. I thought, Darkness is the lastthing that

religion is. Religion is light. Was he testing me? Washe saying, “Religion is darkness,” the way he sometimes said inclass things like “Mammals lay eggs,”

to see if someone wouldcorrect him? (“Only platypuses, sir.”)”There are no grounds for going beyond a scientificexplanation of reality and no sound

reason for believinganything but our sense experience. A clear intellect, closeattention to detail and a little scientific knowledge will exposereligion as

superstitious bosh. God does not exist.” -Did he say that? Or am I remembering the lines of lateratheists? At any rate, it was something of the

sort. I had neverheard such words.
